The Japanese government is arranging to approve a modified plan for landfill work to relocate a key U.S. base within Okinawa next week bypassing the local government, which seems poised to defy a court order mandating the approval, sources with knowledge of the matter say.
In its ruling on a dispute concerning the construction of a U.S. military base in Okinawa Prefecture, the Supreme Court simply endorsed the government’s policy while abandoning the role of the judiciary as the watchdog over the executive branch.
