joining us now bret baier the anchor of special report. jenna was asking this question last hour. elect built, what does it mean? reporter: that is a great question, jon it depends on who you ask and what the criteria are and the different polls. elect twho will beat president obama in the general election. there are a numbr of things this the poll that are interesting, the new washington post abc poll. 7 in 10 people are saying that republicans hear that it was more important to support a candidate that shares their views on the issue rather than one who is considered most likely to win next november. now that does not bode well, despite the best chance to defeat president obama, mitt romney has a clear lead. the one factor on this is that people in this poll, 70% of them
there s a lot of talk about him, because we re in the what has sometimes been called the horse latitudes of presidential politics, which is the summer before, it s the first day of summer, the summer before ferghts and summer before, and apart from announcements and a few scattered debates, not a lot is happening. there s a sense that there s no big frontrunner over the huge majority support, and there certainly isn t that, so the appetite and curiosity about new people in the field is strong. so there was a lot of anticipation for this. and his team certainly helped to build that. the question will be whether he delivered. now, look, we ve got a long way to go, there s a lot that can happen. your opening speech isn t that big a deal, but that s all we re talking about today because it just happened. and it seemed to me it was a little bland. ojon it s my understanding that he was invited to both of the previous debates. was it a mistake for him to skip? well, at this point you
versions of those drones. one u.s. naval commander saying some likely would be deployed in asia. are we trying to get eyes in the sky over china? joining us now a retired u.s. navy captain chuck nash, a fox news military analyst and a guy who took off from aircraft carriers hundreds of timesment what do you think about this idea of putting unmanned craft on aircraft carriers, chuck? well, jon it s something that will take a little bit of time. the navy is running as you say an experiment, kind of a proof of concept, because before we get to steps two and three about how to use these things for the navy the only thing that really matters right now is can it operate on and off an aircraft carrier. once they get that part of it solved then they ll look to some of the other requirements, although they are working on requirements generation right now as far as the endurance and then you start to trade off things, like can you afford to have full stealth, do you need
during the prosecution of the war, the place to try them is in a military tribunal. i applaud the administration for taking 180-degree can turn with regard to the position they had taken previously. jon: but how is what they did so different from what richard reid went on trial in federal court for attempting to do? well, i think there s substantial difference here. reid was actually captured in december 2001 before the system that is now in place in guantanamo bay was established. guantanamo was established in 2002. if richard reid, in fact, had been ap rehelped in 2002 and not 2001, likely he d be in guantanamo currently and possibly being one of the defendants being charged in the military tribunal. jon: what was it that made the difference here? the president wanted to close guantanamo bay, the attorney
well, it s not clear whether it s symptomatic of the age or symptomatic of just the use of the aircraft. but i think what the faa and the ntsb are going to have to do is figure out whether this, these faults are limited to this type of aircraft, the 737-300, or whether it s a prod wither issue. and i think we ll get to that sometime today or tomorrow. i think that s their top priority. jon: the 737 is, as i understand it, still the most popular, the most used aircraft out there. more of them out there flying. if you re going to have a lot of airplanes flying, you re going to have a lot of statistical problems like this, right? is. that s right. and i think it s been noted, it s not uncommon to find these kinds of small fatigue crafts in an aircraft which it goes under review on a regular basis. the question is why did these fatigue cracks propagate, and
