BREAKING: Government approves plans for directly elected Mayor of Limerick Reporter: );   ); Limerick s first directly elected mayor could take office later this year after the Government approved plans to draft the necessary legislation. The Minister of State for Local Government and Planning Peter Burke has welcomed the decision, earlier today, to begin drafting legislation to provide for a the new role which will have executive functions. A report from the Implementation Advisory Group was submitted to Government a number of months ago and today the next stage of the process was approved. “I am pleased that government has given its approval to begin drafting the legislation necessary to establish the office of directly elected mayor in Limerick and to hold a mayoral election in Limerick later this year, if the public health situation allows”, said Minister Burke who has responsibility for the process.

Government gives go ahead to draft legislation for Limerick directly elected mayor   Mr Peter Burke TD, Minister of State for Local Government and Planning welcomed the Government’s decision earlier today to begin drafting legislation to provide for a directly elected mayor with executive functions for Limerick. “I am pleased that Government has given its approval to begin drafting the legislation necessary to establish the office of directly elected mayor in Limerick and to hold a mayoral election in Limerick later this year, if the public health situation allows”, said Minister Burke. “This important decision brings us another step closer to the people of Limerick being able to elect their own mayor”, added the Minister.
