Experts: Concern on Tokyo resurgence of over 1,000
In Tokyo, officials are struggling with another surge in new cases of the coronavirus. Experts worry that 4 weeks from now, there could be more than 1,000 new cases a day.
Tokyo health officials confirmed 673 new cases on Thursday. That is up 103 from the same day last week.
It also marks a week-on-week increase for a 12th straight day.
Disease Control and Prevention Center Director Ohmagari Norio said, Considering the increased foot traffic and the virus variants, cases are likely to increase faster than during the third wave earlier this year.
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko attended the meeting virtually from her home. She was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday after being treated for fatigue.
Cases rising in Japan amid state of emergency
Infections continue to spread in Japan, despite a state of emergency that is in effect in Tokyo, Osaka and four other prefectures.
Officials in the capital reported 1,010 cases on Thursday. It is the fourth time this month the daily tally has hit quadruple digits there.
The northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido confirmed a record 712 infections. That is an increase of nearly 200 from Wednesday s total.
More infectious variants are being blamed for the surge. Researchers at Japan s National Institute of Infectious Diseases say variants carrying the N501Y mutation likely account for about 90 percent of new cases across the country.
