WHEELING Wheeling City Council members had mixed reactions to backlash from three local institutions of higher learning, which this week jointly and publicly opposed the city’s efforts to bring Bluefield State College to Wheeling.
Some council members on Thursday indicated that, moving forward, they would reconsider their support of the effort to bring the southern West Virginia college to Wheeling, a project initiated earlier this year through a memorandum of understanding between the city and Bluefield State. Other council members and city leaders indicated they will continue supporting the move, another part of the ongoing effort to fill vacant space at the city-owned former Ohio Valley Medical Center.

The state of West Virginia reached another somber milestone of the COVID-19 pandemic Friday, surpassing 2,000 COVID-related deaths since the pandemic began.
The Department of Health and Human Resources reported 23 new deaths in a 24-hour period in its Friday update. West Virginia now has experienced 2,006 COVID deaths since the pandemic’s start.
It took West Virginia until Dec.15 to reach 1,000 deaths. It took only until Friday to report the next 1,000.
Meanwhile, the rolling seven-day average of percent positivity has dropped throughout the state since Sunday. On that day, the percent positivity was 9.36. By Thursday, that number was cleaved by more than half to 4.66.

WHEELING An effort is being made to explore increasing police staffing levels in Wheeling, where the police chief says the department does a great job being “reactive” to reports of crimes but would serve the city even better if more “proactive” police work could be done.
Some city leaders in Wheeling have contended that more patrols on the streets are what is needed to best keep crime in check.
On at least two occasions over the past month, Wheeling Councilman Ben Seidler has publicly noted that there has been a noticeable uptick in criminal activity in areas of the city.
