Ray Ballard traveled a twisted road to become a brewmaster

ZANESVILLE – Ray Ballard has known some twists and turns to get where he is. “I discovered the band KISS when I was 10,” he began, “and fell head over heels in love with rock n roll. I soon had a guitar and lessons. I wanted to be a rock star. I moved to Los Angeles in 1985 and I played in bands on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood trying to get discovered. I got everything out of the dream except the fame and the fortune. I had a great time not making it and I don’t regret going for it.” He left California in the mid-90s and moved to Connecticut. Through a co-worker there, he met an East Hartford businessman who wanted to open a brewery. Ballard co-founded that brewery in 2000 and was the brewer for the first three years.
