Fatal fire in Big Island shines light rift between local departments

According to the events report from the Marion County Sheriff s Office, the Easter morning house fire on the 4700 block of Seiter Road began at 5:35 a.m. and Marion Township Fire Department was the first on-scene putting water on the flames at 5:50 a.m. Shortly after firefighters arrived, dispatcher audio obtained by the Marion Star shows a call was made to SVFD for an EMS vehicle and an extra water tanker. In the dispatch audio, SVFD Chief Paul Kerr said his unit would not be responding to the fire, nor would they supply the additional emergency vehicles that were requested. He also took a slight at New Vision by calling them No Vision during the call.

House fire on Easter kills Marion man, three dogs

Correction: Due to a reporter s error, New Vision Fire and Rescue was inaccurately reported as the department originally in charge of the investigation. Tragedy struck a Marion County family after a fire ravaged their home Easter morning, killing a man and three dogs. John Bailey II, 55, of Marion, was pronounced dead at the scene, said April Short of the Marion County Coroner s Office. Short said an autopsy is still being conducted by the Lucas County Coroner to determine the cause of death.  According to an event report from the Marion County Sheriff s Office, the fire began early on Easter morning on the 4700 block of Seiter Road between Espyville Road North and Schmidt Road in Big Island Township. Fire officials and law enforcement believe the fire began in the living room and was caused by a heater. The house has since been deemed a total loss.
