Alpha Phi Alpha Homes extends its community development reach into the Akron suburbs at places such as Friendship Terrace senior apartments in Cuyahoga Falls.
Fifty years ago, after urban renewal displaced thousands of low-income residents, alumni members of the University of Akron s chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the nation s oldest African American fraternity, broke ground on a 551-unit federally funded project that included a high-rise tower, townhouses and garden apartments.
Since that leap of faith by men who had no experience in construction and development, Alpha Phi Alpha Homes Inc., a nonprofit housing, development and management corporation, has overseen the construction of more than 2,400 units of senior and family housing in Akron and Northeast Ohio.
Zora’s House is getting an upgrade.
The Weinland Park-based nonprofit is the new owner of the site of the recently demolished D&J Carryout at North 4th Street and East 8th Avenue in the neighborhood.
After years of exploring options for the property, Community Properties of Ohio donated the land to Zora’s House, a coworking and community space for women of color currently housed in an approximately 2,000-square-foot building on Summit Street. The organization will launch a $2.5 million capital campaign to construct a 10,000-square-foot building, with a tentative goal to open doors in late 2022.
Founder and CEO LC Johnson said the additional space will allow her to extend programming to more women, who often leverage Zora’s House to launch businesses and other initiatives.

CVS Health has invested over $114 million in affordable housing in 2020, which will lead to the construction and rehabilitation of more than 2,800 affordable housing units in 30 cities, across 12 states. Those are the latest figures shared by the healthcare company earlier this week, touting its commitment to the communities it served.
The company said that throughout 2020, it worked with community organizations to provide affordable housing options and services to people facing significant challenges. As a result of the company’s affordable housing investment strategy, more than 460 permanent supportive housing, or PSH, units will be constructed to provide stable homes for people who may be experiencing homelessness, affected by chronic illness, victims of domestic violence, in need of behavioral health or addiction treatment, or are challenged by similar life and health situations.
