On paper, the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger are quarter-ton, light-duty trucks. Available in single- and crew-cab configurations and with your choice of short or long boxes, these platforms can adapt to a variety of lifestyles and uses.
Don’t be fooled by the nameplates’ histories, however: these midsize pickups are now as large as yester-year’s full-size, half-ton haulers. Gone are the days when one of these trucks could barely haul the other out of a ditch; the new Ranger and Tacoma have hit the gym and bulked beyond their predecessors’ tow ratings to around 6,000 lbs each.
That’s a pretty serious payload. Either of these trucks are abundantly capable of pulling anything from a load of garbage to a snowmobile trailer indeed, that’s even enough for some 30-foot campers and toy haulers. Unless you haul excavators on Mondays or yachts on Sundays, these unassuming pickups offer more potential than most drivers will ever need.
