The much talked about surge in covid19 cases appears to be happening in california. New numbers show a shocking rise in infections hitting numbers not seen in months. With that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us. Im dion lim. Certainly not a good day at all for california with the coronavirus. The state reported nearly 11,000 diagnosed cases today, the highest since early august. The Positivity Rate continues to rise with the 14day rate jumping to 4. 4 . It was 4 on friday. That number is a strong indicator of the transmission rate of the virus. Nearly 3700 people are in the hospital getting treated for covid19 and about 1000 of them are in the icu. Now, the spike in covid cases is increasing the demand for testing right here in the bay area. But some testing sites are reaching capacity. Reporter the Health Committee chairman from the Latino Task Force says demand is unbelievably high at this test site in the mission. Recently 500 people are getting tested every day. We are here to service the Latino Community but not exclusive to and so we take care of the folks that show up that need that test. Reporter he believes the city needs more testing sites. We need a vast amount of low barrier testing sites throughout San Francisco, easy access, sameday walkup in all the neighborhoods, where we know that there is an increase in cases. San francisco currently does more testing than any other city in the nation. Deputy Health Director dr. Navina baba says the city is doing more than 5,000 tests per day. The numbers are getting bigger, the daily case count numbers are getting bigger, 184,000 on friday. Affirming i think with many of you, many professionals including yourself have predicted back in the summer. What do you see as the path ahead, do you see these numbers going up . What is the biggest thing we have to tackle here . Know that viruses always get worse in the fall. Traditional, highly predictable readings. We did not know what would happen for sure, but we knew it would get worse. The word is contained. It is wellestablished. Is wearing a mask, good hygiene by keeping your hands clean. Keeping yourself physically distant from one another. And of course, when we get a vaccine that is safe and effective, we can add that.
