A team of assessors from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (MLEAC) will arrive on Thursday, May 9, 2024, to examine all aspects of the Big Rapids Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services Chief Danielle Haynes announced yesterday.
“Verification by the team that the Big Rapids Police Department meets the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission’s “best practice” standards is part of a voluntary process to achieve accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence”, Chief Haynes said.
As part of this final On-Site Assessment, employees and members of the public are invited to provide comments to the Assessment Team. They may do so by telephone or email. On October 6th, 2023, officers from the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety and community members, will join other officers and community members nationwide to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee during a Coffee with a Cop Day at the Big Rapids Farmer’s Market.

The Mecosta County Youth Academy is now accepting applications for their camp in July.
The Mecosta County Youth Academy is a one-week program for boys and girls ages 12-14. It will be
held July 17-21 from 8:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.
The academy will focus on several topics, including teamwork, leadership, physical fitness, defensive tactics, firearms safety, first aid, and fire safety. The academy is being sponsored by the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office and the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety.
