(WBTV) - The Concord Police Department will officially retire the unit number of fallen Officer Jason Shuping, who was killed in the line of duty last week. Funeral services for Shuping got underway Tuesday afternoon. The service began at 1 p.m. at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center, located on NC Highway 49 North in Concord. The Rev. Richard Myers officiated the service as the community honored the life of officer Shuping.

WCCB Charlotte s CW December 23, 2020 Shuping was escorted by three dozen motorcycle officers to his final resting place.  “He is our fallen hero,” said Jill Barrier, a Concord resident.   People stopped to pay respects on the streets as 300 other friends, family and community members attended the funeral of Officer Jason Shuping at the Cabarrus Arena.  “It just makes my heart glad that people respect them and love them and just want to be here to show their respect,” said Barrier.  “His dedication to our city will be forever cherished and remembered,” said Concord Mayor William Dusch.  The 25 year old was shot and killed on December 16th while responding to a carjacking call near Concord Mills. The suspect, 29 year old Jeremy Daniels also died of gunshots.

Two of those officers have died due to their injuries: Officer Jason Shuping with the Concord Police Department, and Officer Tyler Herndon with the Mount Holly Police Department.

A North Carolina police officer was recovering Saturday night after being shot while on duty, becoming the fourth officer shot in the Charlotte area in a little more than a week, according to reports. Cpl. Frank Lee Whittington Jr., a 14-year veteran of the Kings Mountain Police Department, underwent surgery and was expected to recover, Kings Mountain police Chief Lisa Proctor said, according to WCNC-TV. Chief Lisa Proctor (WRAL) Whittington was shot while responding to a report of a suspicious person on the back porch of a house. Proctor said she didn’t have details about the shooting.
