KSL TV SALT LAKE CITY A $2.5 million civil lawsuit has been filed by the estate of a man shot and killed by a Unified police officer a shooting that prosecutors determined was not legally justified. On Wednesday, a brother and cousin of Bryan Peña-Valencia, who represent his estate, along with their attorney Robert Sykes announced the lawsuit against the officers involved in the shooting death as well as the Unified Police Department, claiming the officers due to a lack of training escalated the situation by unnecessarily chasing after him and then used excessive force by shooting him five times after he was already on the ground.

San Francisco, CA – A San Francisco judge dropped the charges on April 16 against a man who attacked police officers with a vodka bottle in 2019. Jamaica Hampton, 25, was inducted by a grand jury on seven charges that included assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest, KTVU reported. The judge dismissed the charges based on a procedural error by prosecutors involving identification of the defendant. The incident which led up to the shooting began when police received a report of a “hot prowl burglary” at 7:47 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2019 during which the male suspect had forced open the door of an apartment in the 900-block of Capp Street, according to KPIX.
