The San Francisco Office of Transgender Initiatives recently announced a new campaign alongside the SF Bay Area LGBTQ COVID Relief Coalition to address health disparities, particularly as they concern the pandemic.
The Trans Wellness SF campaign is also seeking to collect more data about the transgender and gender-nonconforming communities, according to Clair Farley, a trans woman who is the executive director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives, in an interview with the Bay Area Reporter February 11. I think what s new with this wellness campaign launch is a connected strategy of doing education about the implications of the pandemic on the community with a public health survey, Farley said.
SF Pride Plans for 2021 Revealed by Executive Director Fred Lopez
Nearly a year ago today, San Francisco Mayor London Breed along with Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, San Francisco Pride, the Office of Transgender Initiatives, and other city officials kicked off what they anticipated would be a year of major festivities in celebration of the 50th anniversary of SF Pride. Little did they know that just a month later the city would be sheltering-in-place due to a deadly new pandemic.
Here is what they had originally envisioned: “The 50th anniversary Celebration and Parade, with the theme ‘Generations of Hope,’ will fill the streets of downtown San Francisco from the Embarcadero to City Hall on Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28, 2020.”
President Joe Biden on Monday signed an executive order repealing the ban on transgender troops serving in the military.
The January 25 action was announced by the White House shortly before the ceremonial swearing in of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Politico reported. Austin had supported the repeal of the ban, which was put into effect by former President Donald Trump. I truly believe . that if you re fit and you re qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve, Austin told lawmakers during his confirmation hearing. President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America s strength is found in its diversity, a fact sheet from the White House noted.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors lone LGBTQ member plans to request a hearing be held this year on the city s plan to preserve its LGBTQ cultural heritage.
Gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who represents the city s LGBTQ Castro district, will be seeking a public airing on San Francisco s groundbreaking LGBTQ+ Cultural Heritage Strategy. First released in draft form in 2018 and then published with revisions last summer, the 56-page document provides city leaders myriad ideas for preserving and strengthening San Francisco s LGBTQ community.
Other than being taken up by the city s historic preservation commission in the fall of 2018, there has yet to be a public hearing about the final version of the strategy before any city oversight panels or a supervisors committee. The planning department, whose staff helped shepherd its creation, considers the document to now be finalized with its publication online in August.
