Charges laid after CQ mine death

Premium Content Subscriber only Prosecution action has commenced following the death of 33-year-old Donald Rabbitt at a Blackwater mine last year. He suffered critical injuries and died at the scene. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor said prosecutions had commenced against the operator, contractor and a former site senior executive of the Curragh Mine arising from the death of coal mine worker Donald Rabbitt.   Operator Coronado Curragh Pty Ltd has been charged with one offence under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, alleging the operator failed to ensure the risk to coal mine workers was at an acceptable level.

A spokesman for Curragh mine owner, Coronado Global Resources, said it was not appropriate to comment on the matter while the Mines Inspectorate’s investigation was ongoing. “The anniversary of Donald’s death was marked at all Coronado facilities in Australia and in the US with production ceasing for a period at Curragh to allow for reflection and safety discussions with our teams,” he said. “We acknowledge the significant impact this incident has had on Donald’s family, loved ones and colleagues and we again express our deepest sympathies to Donald’s family and co-workers at this time.” Donald Rabbitt, 33.
