NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Recognizes 15 UK Students, Alums

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 10, 2021)  The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that 10 students and recent graduates have been selected to receive government-funded National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships. In addition, a UK doctoral student and four alumni received honorable mention recognition from the NSF.  As part of the five-year fellowship, NSF Fellows receive a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees for a research-based master s or doctoral degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) field. In 2020, the NSF awarded approximately 2,000 fellowships from an applicant pool of over 13,000.

OHIO student selected for coveted 2021 Udall Scholarship

OHIO student selected for coveted 2021 Udall Scholarship Published: May 10, 2021 Author: Jalyn Bolyard Morgan Spehar is the only student in the State of Ohio to receive prestigious award Ohio University’s Morgan Spehar, from Auburn, Ohio, has been selected as a Udall Scholar for the 2021-22 academic year, highlighting her work in environmental journalism. She is the sole recipient in the state of Ohio from any Ohio university or college. Spehar, who will be a senior in the upcoming academic year, is an Honors Tutorial College student majoring in journalism and environmental studies. She is among 55 students from 42 colleges and universities across the United States selected as the 2021 Udall Scholars.  

2 UK Students to Study Swahili, Chinese on Critical Language Scholarships

of LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 29, 2021)  The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that two Wildcats have been awarded Critical Language Scholarships, which provide funding to participate in intensive language and cultural immersion programs for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Mihir Kale, a political science major, Chellgren Fellow and member of the Lewis Honors College, will study Swahili virtually through the MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation in Arusha, Tanzania. Michael Di Girolamo, a foreign language and international economics/Chinese and international studies major, Chellgren Fellow and member of the Lewis Honors College, will study Chinese virtually through Changchun Humanities and Sciences College in Changchun, China.  

3 Wildcats Awarded 2021-22 Goldwater Scholarship

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 19, 2021) The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three Wildcats biology students Kayli Bolton, Zoe Hert and Carly Karrick have been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The UK students are among 410 students nationwide selected to receive the 2021-22 Goldwater Scholarship. This year s Goldwater Scholars were selected based on academic merit from a field of 1,256 math, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of 438 of the nation s colleges and universities. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by Congress to honor the former U.S. senator who served the nation for 30 years. The program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
