(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure citizens with Bank Verification Number (BVN) are automatically provided with the National Identification Number (NIN).
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, disclosed this on Monday when he led a delegation of chief executive officers on a visit to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and a private enrolling center in Abuja.
Pantami said after making a presentation to National Economic Sustainability Committee, his attention and that 0f the CBN Governor were drawn to the need to replace BVN with NIN.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ali Pantami has explained the positions and difference between the Bank Verification Number, BVN, and the National Identity Number, NIN.
The Minister stated this while briefing the press at the end of facility tour and inspection of the ongoing NIN enrolement exercise at NIMC and other designated centres across the country.
He explained that he had made a presentation to the National Economic Sustainability Committee and drew the attention of CBN Governor that we need to replace BVN with NIN because the BVN is a bank policy, while NIN is a law because it has been established by law, noting that ‘‘the strength of the law wherever you go is not the same with a policy of one institution.”

In a bid to ensure proper registration of SIM cards, the Federal Government has approved 173 centres and 30 state government institutions to conduct the enrolment of all persons into the National Identity Database (NIDB) on behalf of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
NIMC announced the move on its website on Wednesday.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved 173 centres and 30 State government institutions for the National Identity Number, NIN, enrollment across Nigeria.
It made this known in a public notice on the official website of the National Identity Management Commission titled, “Approved Data Capturing Agents (Digital Identity Ecosystem)”.
DAILY POST recalls that this is coming less than 24 hours after the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, had asked telecommunications operators in the country to block SIM cards not registered with NIN after two weeks.
Nevertheless, the House of Representatives had urged NCC to extend the deadline for the provision of NIN by 1-year.
