when i came here. and when i started learning more about the needs of offender population i thought why can t i be an advocate for them? on a daily basis they will send letters to me or notes requesting information, maybe complaining, or some of them just telling me have a nice day miss gilmore. and that s nice. because it s better than getting cussed out. one of gilmore s inmates is lukuman aderibigbe. i ll say, hey, lukuman, are you okay, mon? and he ll go, oh, miss gilmore, you okay, mon? i enjoy that kind of talk with him. when i can understand him. he gets to talking fast and i say, slow it down, buddy.

and then once they get here, all the excitement starts. every week, dozens of new inmates arrive at limon correctional facility. a level 4 prison located on the barren plains of eastern colorado. [ livestock moos ] the prison sits on 320 acres and houses inmates in six different living units. the type of offenders that we have at limon are violent offenders. 64% violent. 244 are serving a life sentence. limon has had a reputation of being a violent prison amongst the offender population. they do tend to send the majority of violent offenders to limon. it s crazy how cold it is. i m too damn skinny for this.

lot seating was designed because we had offenders designating them for race or different gangs. so the department adopted a policy to have assigned seating to where the staff controlled the flow of the offender population in the dining hall. as the inmates come in, we re going to have them sit two rows at a time. once they fill up those two rows, we re going to step back and give them an additional two rows to sit down. i think it s a little easier because we can keep them all in front of us. before they would be behind us, coming in and out, back and forth. it s just easier for us to keep an eye on them. you have to fill every seat. you can t tell somebody you ain t sitting there. if you won t sit at a table, then you have to throw your tray away. you can t eat it. you can t take nothing off of your tray, and you have to leave the chow hall, which makes you hate it a little more. now you re hungry and you re pissed off. such anger reached a boiling
