in ukraine. it s truly devastating, the images coming out. and now it is a desperate search for survivors amid the rubble. so far we know that at least 17 people are dead after a russian missile hit a residential building in the central city of uman. we re told the death toll will likely continue to rise as we speak. this all happened just before 5:00 a.m. local time. so many of these people asleep in bed. according to the zelenskyy government there were 46 in that building, and 27 of them now destroyed. the cnn team on the ground is seeing bodies removed from the decimated residential building. we saw it playing out live unfortunately as nic robertson was speaking to john ferman earlier this hour, sara. the pictures are awful. this pennant bearing the insignia of the russian military s general s staff was found hanging inside the bedroom

report. this is the site of russian missile attack, here in the town of uman. this is the building that was hit shortly after 4am. you can see this entire section of the building collapsed. people were sleeping when this attack happened. residents were trapped under the rubble. it has been more than ten hours since this attack happened. the search and rescue operation have been here. the authorities said at least three children were killed here in uman, a town far from the front line. there have also been attacks in dnipro and the capital, kyiv. the devastation could have been much worse if it wasn t for the work of the country s air defence. the military says all but two of the 23 missiles that had been fired by russia were intercepted. reacting to these attacks, president zelensky said it was another night of russian
and heading further east to the city of dnipro and another deadly attack. the local mayor said a mother and her three year old daughter were killed. the bbc s hugo bachega sent this update from kyiv. the large scale attack happened after four o clock in the morning here and hit places in central and southern regions of ukraine. some dramatic images have emerged from the city of uman, where a residential building partially collapsed, and in the city of dnipro a mother and her daughter aged three were killed after their house was hit. now, here in kyiv there haven t been reports of casualties. the authorities are saying that 11 cruise missiles and two attack drones were intercepted by the country s air defence systems, and i think this happens as the ukrainians are preparing for a counteroffensive to try to take back territory that s now under occupation, so obviously the concern is that russia could be planning more attacks like this.
