tonight, a new battle brewing in texas after prospective biology professors at texas tech university were asked to give a statement to their commitment to diversity. critics say it shouldn t be part of the hiring process. the story that is first out front. reporter: you ve heard politicians railing against critical race theory. critical race theory is bigoted. it is a lie, and it is every bit as racist as the clansmen in white sheets! reporter: but now, conservative activists are embracing a new fight against programs known as diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. di is the new crt. we want education, not indoctrination. reporter: the debate has made its way to texas tech university in the deeply conservative city of lubbock. a group called the national association of dollars released nearly 100 pages of documents related to the hiring of four biology professors at texas tech. the interview process included meeting with adi committee, and

central plains, and take a look at what we re expecting severe weather for today. parts of the texas panhandling, oklahoma, kansas, nebraska, and up into south dakota. this is an area we ll be tracking into the evening for the potential of seeing some damaging winds in excess of 60 miles an hour, large hail and even tornadoes. by tomorrow oklahoma city, you re looking at that risk for severe storms. this risk is not as large as last week s, estimated to be about an ef3 strength. it only takes one storm to produce a tornado and cause significant damage in your area, so have a way to heed the warnings and into wednesday, oklahoma city, you re seeing that risk yet again and also parts of northern texas including the city of lubbock. i do want to switch gears a little bit because hurricane season for the atlantic officially started on saturday, june 1st, and we re already watching an area of showers and storms that s very disorganized right now, a lot of wind sheer, so that s helping to te
big improvement coming up for coastal areas in southern california. otherwise across the center of the country. we ve been talking about the drought. almost a year in portions of the midwest and central and southern plains. we re continuing to see some showers and storms moving into these areas. localized flooding is possible. but not really expecting widespread severe weather. just beneficial rain across portions of missouri, illinois, western portions of kentucky, texas seeing much needed rainfall to the south of the city of lubbock. we re seeing a big improvement in the drought conditions. two weeks ago across parts of minnesota, into kentucky, we were at about 40% between extreme and exceptional drought. big improvement in this week down to 13%. you can see we ve seen a big improvement in states like kentucky, indiana and illinois. big good news across parts of the midwest arresting the drought. across the northeast, beautiful. a lot of sunshine and temperatures very falllike.
