yesterday s rampage at ft. hood, texas, is doubly painful for a base and a community that has been through this before, and it wasn t that long ago either just five years. i m joined now by the colleen, texas, mayor dan corbin standing by live. i want to touch base as this story continues to unfold, is there anything you can update us coming out from the area where you are? i don t have any new information, but at 1:00 lieutenant gerald meeting with community leaders. and i think at that time we re going to get an update. i think he wants to get us updated before his press conference this afternoon. and i know that, you know, the community of killeen is so connected to this base really hand-in-hand it would seem. are they keeping you in the loop? are you being updated as to all
brigade building being of some interest in all this. remember don, we heard somebody talking about the degree to which everyone ran from this area when it happened. this is called one area is called tank destroyer road. this goes through the middle of everything. it speaks to the history of the place and it leads to the area down here where major nidal hasan did his shooting some years ago, the main building where that happened was scheduled to be torn down after his trial was done. here we go again, and for the people of killeen and this base, it s not just this time, it goes back to 1991. there was a cafeteria out there, and although it happened on the civilian side of the community, many people on the base very strongly tied to that. at the time, that was the biggest massacre this country has known. it s been eclipsed by virginia
community and the investigations. let me bring in the mayor of killeen. nice to meet you. thank you for coming by. i can t imagine the last 24 hours you and this community have endured. it was quite a shock and we have all been stunned by the developments and we were full of hope and as the casualties became apparent, we were overcome by grief. we reach out to the soldiers. there is 41,000 soldiers stationed at ft. hood. those are active soldiers that they did ploy in combat and great people and they are well-led. when something like this happens, several hundred of them have been killed out of ft. hood. we not only mourned the three victims who died with the hundreds who have given their lives and families. we are waiting. i can see people getting set up from the news conference.
streets coming in you can even tell in the town of killeen, somber, very quiet, not a lot of cars out on the road. and the entrances into the main gate completely quiet and guards are stationed up several hundred yards away from the main gate checking cars and asking people why they re pulling up into the area. so a situation that s very tense and a situation that many people are monitoring closely waiting to go seat conditions of the soldiers that were victims in today s shooting. ed lavandara on the scene for us now at fort hood. stand by, ed. we re going to get back to you. we re waiting to hear from the fort hood commanding general shortly. the news conference getting ready to begin. we ll take another quick break. much more of our special coverage right after this. i have low testosterone. there, i said it.
hood. it is neighboring community to the largest military post in the country. remember fort hood spans some 350 square miles. it is massive. in terms of the attack, it wasn t a direct attack, alleged direct attack against tort hood. instead he planned to target a busy restaurant somewhere in the busy city of killeen. that restaurant wasn t identified by authorities in the criminal complaint. we don t know if he had one in mind. according to paperwork we re getting in court he wanted somewhere known to be frequented by fort hood soldiers and their families. according to the paperwork he wanted to use pressure cookers stuffed with gunpowder and shrapnel to attack his fellow soldiers. as you mentioned as he was leaving court this morning he did yell out nidal hasan, fort hood, 2009. as you mentioned, he is the former army psychiatrist, now facing the death penalty if convicted of killing 13 of his fellow soldiers,
