In the latest quarterly civilian casualty assessment report ending Dec. 31, 2020, U.S. Africa Command received no new reports of civilian casualties and closed out two of three open cases. This is the fourth quarterly civilian casualty assessment report since U.S. Africa Command began releasing reports in April 2020 as part of its commitment to increased transparency and accountability.

US Army General Stephen Townsend, commander, US Africa Command, completed a multi-day engagement in Somalia and a visit to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), operating off the coast of Somalia, between 16 and 18 January.
While in Somalia, Townsend met with US Ambassador to Somalia Don Yamamoto and key military leaders from the Somali Armed Forces, including Minister of Defence, Hassan Hussein Haji, and Somali Chief of Defence Forces Brigadier General Odawa Yusuf Raage, to discuss continued security cooperation between the US and Somali partners as well as joint efforts to counter the al Qaeda aligned terrorist group al-Shabaab.
