(WDAM) - Friday was a historic day for Dixie Electric as the company was awarded funding to continue its high-speed internet expansion to rural areas. Chairman Dane Maxwell of the Mississippi Public Service Commission signed and approved $21.7 Million for the DE FastLink Project. “This is our time in history to bring forth the technology, high-speed internet that everybody uses today,” Maxwell said. The DE FastLink Project is Dixie Electric’s fiber internet service launched after the pandemic showed the lack of high-speed internet in rural areas.

Maxwell’s signature marks the allocation of $25.7 million from the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. The fund brings access to high-speed internet service to over 51,000 Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association members across 12 counties. “It’s as big of a deal as providing power to them in 1938 when we were founded,” said Matthew Ware, Chief Executive Officer & General Manager of PRVEPA. “Now we’re giving them a new technology that I think will have the same implications to our membership as it did back then.”

(WLOX) - Across Mississippi, efforts are underway to provide high-tech internet service to some of the state’s most underserved communities. “Mississippi is always last in a lot of areas, but we won’t be this time,” said Mississippi Public Service Commissioner for the Southern District Dane Maxwell. Excitement was in the air Monday after CoastConnect received an eligible telecommunications carrier certification from the commission, which essentially allows the company to receive $7.8 million from the FCC’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund.

Chairman Dane Maxwell of the Mississippi Public Service Commission on Monday joined leadership and staff from CoastConnect, LLC, a subsidiary of Coast Electric Power Association, to sign an order releasing $7.8 million to bring high-speed Internet to Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River counties. “I am honored for the opportunity to sign off on projects like this that bring such a huge benefit to the people of Mississippi,” Chairman Dane Maxwell said. “With the help of this federal funding, CoastConnect will be able to provide high-speed internet to its customers who may have never had access to it before.” Last year, Coast Electric participated in the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) Phase I Auction process and was awarded the $7.8 million.
