assemble the pieces and see what wept wrong with it. martha: thanks. my next guest was the commanding officer of the u.s.s. cole, the navy destroyer that was blown up by al-quaida in october of 2000. a tragic awful event that killed 17 sailors and injured almost 40 others in yemen. retired navy commander kirk lippold joins me now. thanks very much. good to have you with us today. i guess i should start with that question, which was raised by james cameron and others about why if the navy had awareness of this implosion, why we didn t learn of that news and that no, sir sooner. well, with all due respect to a hollywood producer, when you look at it, what the may i have may have picked up is an acoustic anomaly. this goes to the heart of our
combined arms fight. and synchronizing the troops. that takes time. on this memorial day, thank you as always for your service. it s also a special moment as we remember the sacrifices made. and also your son. we want to point out, he was just promoted. yeah. he s onboard the uss cole. tell us more about him and what he s doing. sure, the uss cole, that ship was attacked in october of 2000. the beginning of the global war on terror. we got to see it on fleet week. it went past the freedom tower there. the uss cole celebrates memorial day every day. there are 17 stars that exist on their side there where the attack took place. there is a soldier and a sailor gets down every day and make sure that stars are polished. they don t walk on those things. it shows, again, the level of sacrifice. and from my perspective, as a veteran and i ask folks today as a day of remembrance. just be reflective and be worthy of the sacrifice that has been made by those that came before
of the flying glass. and then there was the coal bombing in october of 2000 killing 19 american sailors in the harbor in yemen. and then 9/11. but that doesn t stop. there was a drum roll of continuing attacks. they never got back to broadway. but they were attempting to contact america and allies. and then in 2011 bin laden is killed and al zawahiri has been seen the man behind bin laden and often not being as charismatic and so on. but give him credit. this was an organization that on 9/11 had about 400 members. now counter terrorist experts around 40,000 members of al qaeda and its affiliates when stretch to morocco to india. so under his guidance this organization has expanded and
risk of harm to other civilians. we make it clear again tonight, that no matter how long it takes no matter where you hide if you are a threat to our people united states will find you and take you out. we ayman al-zawahiri was an egyptian born physician, who founded an egyptian islamic jihad, he formed an alliance with osama bin laden in 1919 eight, who s indicted for the bombing of multiple u.s. embassies that year, it killed more hundred people including 12 americans. he was closely linked to the bombing of uss cole in october of 2000, and was believed to be one of the main architects of the attacks on september 11th. he became the leader of al-qaeda, after vladimir s killed back in 2011, and has been on the fbi s most wanted terrorist list, the state department was offered a reward of up to 25 million bucks for help in his apprehension. tonight, the fbi has updated
