Rocks installed to discourage new homeless tents alongside Oceanside street

Print City crews installed large rocks alongside South Oceanside Boulevard on Wednesday morning in an attempt to keep homeless people from erecting tents where a large encampment had been cleared the previous day. “Oceanside has solved homelessness,” yelled homeless advocate Michael McConnell in a mocking tone as he stood in the street near the workers. “All it took was some rocks.” While McConnell saw the rock installation as a waste of money that could have been used to help homeless people, one business owner in a mall adjacent to South Oceanside Boulevard saw it as a positive move and said he had lost potential customers because of the encampment.

Oceanside dismantles homeless encampment, moves people to motel

OCEANSIDE    What had started as a homeless man’s effort to create what he called a “trauma-informed safe center” for homeless people in Oceanside came to an end Tuesday morning when police officers and outreach workers began clearing out the area and moving people into motel rooms. Rodney McGough, who had overseen the encampment along South Oceanside Boulevard as it grew over the past few months, said the city caused unnecessary confusion and anxiety in the crackdown, but he accepted a motel room and said he was ready to move on. “I’m very thankful for the efforts to help us move to another place and continue the healing that’s going on,” he said.

This Oceanside homeless encampment has one rule: Keep it clean

OCEANSIDE    The row of tents lining a side street near Oceanside Boulevard looks alarming at first sight, and anyone passing by might expect to see the area overrun with the trash and clutter generally associated with homeless encampments. A closer look, however, reveals the area is spotless. The tents look new, clean, and in a uniform order, with each one separated by a short, red, tented storage bin. “We understand that trashing this area is the number one reason why people wouldn’t want us here,” said Rodney McGough, a homeless man who lives at the site and has led the effort to keep it clean.
