赛璐珞即硝化纤维塑料，从1891年开始就是制造乒乓球的材料。赛璐珞的主要成分是纤维素硝酸酯，以及乙醇、樟脑等，具有很强的抗张强度，且耐水、耐油、耐酸。缺点是易燃，而且燃烧时会释放大量刺激性有毒气体。由于遇到明火、高热极易燃烧，乘坐飞机时就不允许携带赛璐珞球。另外，在生产过程中会产生毒性粉尘，会像石棉一样造成肺癌，对工厂工人的身体健康危害很大。在过去的一百多年里，赛璐珞在乒乓球生产中一直是不可替代的原材料，但在生产过程中，这一材料也极具危险性。国内一些厂家都曾因此遭遇过火灾，蒙受巨大的经济损失。
