whizzing through space? who is monitoring this stuff? well, nasa is monitoring, as are other astronomy and scientific circles in other nation. nasa and the jet propulsion laboratory in california have a program called the near-earth projects program, and they re actively scanning the universe looking for potential threats and nasa s administrator reaching out to other countries, universities, and observatories, and even amateur astronomers to find people willing to dedicate time to look up because we all benefit from knowing what is out there and what is coming close to us. so far nearly 11,000 near-earth objects have been discovered and identified. hundred of those are more than a kill almoster in diameter, and one way to save the plane from an incoming asteroid is to capture and redirect that asteroid by using the gravity of a spacecraft. this is actually a mission nasa is intending to attempt to do in the 2020s. wow, fascinating.
