Obesity: Weak metabolism in fat tissue linked to health effects

Written by James Kingsland on April 14, 2021 Fact checked by Mary Cooke, Ph.D. New research uses molecular analyses to explain the adverse health effects of obesity. Photo editing by Stephen Kelly; dra schwartz/Getty Images A study has investigated the effects of obesity on metabolism and gene expression in muscle and fat tissue. The results suggest that there is weaker energy metabolism and heightened inflammation in both types of tissue in people with obesity. The adverse health effects of obesity appear to be associated with the changes in fat tissue, rather than those in muscle. Obesity can have severe effects on a person’s quality of life and lifespan.

Obesity reduces mitochondrial gene expression in fat tissue

[Finland], April 11 (ANI): During a recent study, researchers at the Obesity Research Unit of the University of Helsinki found that obesity clearly reduces mitochondrial gene expression in fat tissue or adipose tissue. Mitochondria are important cellular powerplants that process all of our energy intakes. If the pathways associated with breaking down nutrients are lazy, the changes can often have health-related consequences. The study was recently published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.
