Akil Baddoo and Parker Meadows hit consecutive homers to lead off a four-run eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Tuesday night. Kansas City's Zack Greinke pitched five shutout innings, and saw his winless streak grow to 22 games (19 starts) since a 6-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on May 3. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nelson Velázquez reached on Olson's throwing error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Nick Pratto's two-out base hit.
This wasn't a run you saw coming — but then again, you rarely do when a baseball team starts to play spoiler. The Kansas City Royals, who reached 100 losses over two weeks ago and have been out of contention for almost the entire season, suddenly became a huge thorn in the side of the defending champions. The Royals went 5-1 in two recent series against Houston, leaving the Astros in a precarious spot in the playoff race.
