Several Dallas City Council Races Go to Runoffs

Races for six Dallas City Council seats are headed to runoffs this summer. Residents will be able to cast their vote in June to decide who will represent them in Districts 2, 4, 7, 11, 13 and 14. Council members in 2, 11 and 14 have met their term limits, meaning new faces will take all of those seats. District 2 In District 2, voters will choose between former park board member Jesse Moreno and Sana Syed, an ex-Dallas city spokeswoman and current executive at a real estate investment firm. Moreno has the endorsement of Adam Medrano, the district’s incumbent. The winner will be the first person in 16 years to represent the district who doesn’t belong to the Medrano family. Jesse Moreno’s wife, Monica Moreno, however, is a member of Medrano’s city staff.

How the Katy Lincoln Trail Project Could Upend Life for a Blind Resident

Brittany King has lived in the Turtle Creek Terrace Condominiums in Oak Lawn for the last eight years. Having lost her vision as a teenager, she is legally blind. Her condo gives her the accessibility she needs to maintain independent living. “The Upcreek and Oak Lawn areas are one of the few parts of Dallas that have the ability to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities like myself through the vital and direct access to public transportation, grocery stores and essential services,” King told the City Council last Wednesday. For about the last five years, King has been fighting to maintain her way of life, threatened by a development that was up for a final City Council vote this week. Lincoln Property Co. has wanted to upzone the land so they could build taller structures, increase density and get more bang for their buck for a multi-family development. The development has been dubbed the Lincoln Katy Trail project.

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council District 14

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council District 14 Incumbent David Blewett faces Paul Ridley and Elizabeth Viney. Two years ago, when Philip Kingston lost his seat to represent District 14 on the Dallas City Council, he was replaced by David Blewett, a person who knew far less than Kingston did about how City Hall worked and about what the priorities of the district’s residents were, but who enjoyed a critical advantage. He didn’t have Kingston’s divisive approach. Blewett stumbled as a council member initially, but he has since developed into a capable representative who has balanced difficult questions between growth and preservation in a district where residents are hardly shy about voicing their views.
