Years of disputes over housing land in Portlaoise town has been resolved, opening the way for planned new social houses.
There are about 34 houses to be built on land on the town side of O’Moore Place.
It is part of a multi million Urban Regeneration project for what is one of the oldest council estate in Laois, built over 70 years ago. Already €400,000 has been spent demolishing six houses to add parking and a wider road.
Since 2019 however, the plan by Co-operative Housing and Laois County Council has been stalled over access to the land. The field’s owner had agreed but a title issue was in dispute.

Laois is being cleaned up by hundreds of community volunteers and residents this spring in an incredible display of community spirit and resilience.
The official Clean Up Laois Week had to be cancelled this year because of Covid-19 restrictions, but Laois County Council is supporting Tidy Towns groups, GAA clubs and individuals who want to get out and clean their local area, by providing bags and taking them away.
However the dumping battle is still being lost say councillors.
Cllr John King from Rathdowney says names of dumpers must be publicised.
€5 million for former Bord na Mona staff to insulate Laois houses

Laois council houses are to be given €5 million worth of energy upgrades installed by former Bord na Móna employees in the next three years.
The state granted money has been allocated for Laois under the Just Transition fund.
The fund is paying to retrain the semi state company’s Midlands workers to work in greener industries, as peat production is ending due to its environmental impact.
Another €300,000 will be spent upgrading Laois council homes under a separate Energy Efficiency programme, also fully paid by the state.
