SA Hired Locomotive, Wagons Derail - NewZimbabwe com

By Staff Reporter Nyazura: The locomotive which derailed and killed an engineman between Tsungwesi and Tikwiri between Mutare and Harare recently was on a hire from a South African company Traxtion Sheltam. Two fitters from Traxtion Sheltam who were seconded to National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) to service the engines were seriously injured during the accident. The South African hired locomotive was pulling 22 wagons with 800 tonnes of chrome ore to Port City of Beira in Mozambique. The ore belonged to Zimasco which had hired the locomotive and the wagons. The engineman died on the spot after he was trapped in between the wagon while the NRZ guard was injured.

The accident was caused by sand that covered the rail road level crossing following heavy rains. This caused our locomotive to go off track,” he said, adding that 11 NRZ employees were onboard at the time.

Two NRZ Employees Killed After Train Derails

By Bulawayo Correspondent TWO National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) employees died Thursday night while seven others were injured when a goods train travelling from Hwange to Bulawayo derailed at Redbank Siding, about 40 kilometres from Bulawayo. NRZ public relations manager Nyasha Maravanyika confirmed the accident, adding that it happened at a railway level crossing. He said the freight train had just picked a passenger wagon carrying the company’s workers who had been carrying out maintenance work at a sawmill siding when the incident occurred. “I can confirm that an NRZ freight train derailed on Wednesday at 12:10 am and killed two NRZ employees as well as injuring seven other employees,” said Maravanyika.
