There is growing disquiet in Nyanza and Western because of ‘few’ additional constituencies the regions will get if the Constitutional of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020, sails through in the referendum.
The Bill, popularly referred to as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill, proposes to increase the number of constituencies from 290 to 360.
The proposed law will see Deputy President William Ruto’s Rift Valley stronghold getting the lion’s share of the electoral areas followed by Nairobi, Central and Coast.
The Bill, that was passed by the county assemblies and has been forwarded to Parliament, indicates that Rift Valley will get 23 new constituencies, Nairobi 12, Central Kenya 11 and Coast 10.

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo [File, Standard]
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been criticised following Wednesday’s appointment of his deputy and members of his Cabinet.
Elders drawn from former Governor John Nyagarama’s clan questioned Mr Nyaribo’s pick of deputy and a 10-person Cabinet, which is expected to help him deliver services to the people in the next 18 months.
Nyagarama, who hailed from the Banyamatuta clan, died on December 18 last year.
The critics said they expected Nyaribo to pick a deputy governor from the Banyamatuta, which is one the three main sub-clans of the Bagirango, who occupy West Mugirango constituency.

Politicians were caned for talking BBI politics during the burial of Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama on Thursaday.
Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri condemned some leaders who had begun politicking instead of condoling with the family and friends.
Ongeri, who remembered the late Nyagarama as a man of peace, told mourners that they should be thankful for all the help they had gotten especially from the National Government.
“I’m yet to see a funeral of this magnitude where the Head of State, ODM Party boss and the entire government machinery is involved. For me this is an indication of peace and goodwill,” he said.
