The process aimed at addressing land reform needs to place those who were dispossessed at the centre and not on the sidelines.
This is according to Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi who addressed the issue of land during Sowetan Dialogues on Wednesday. Ngcukaitobi was joined by Sowetan editor Nwabisa Makunga and political analyst Ongama Mtimka in unraveling what has divided the SA political landscape.
Ngcukaitobi said the current format of land reform still discriminates against victims of apartheid.
“The design of land reform, particularly on the restitution, works against the interest of the landless…Claimants become spectators. They depend on an attorney, advocate, land valuer, a historian or an accountant. They depend on all these professionals to speak on their behalf. The space for them to have their say [is not there],” Ngcukaitobi said.

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) condemns the robbery at gunpoint of an eNCA news crew. The journalists were reporting on the lack of service delivery in Khayelistha, Cape Town on Tuesday.
SANEF has learnt that eNCA reporter Monique Mortlock and camera operator Asanda Javu were left traumatised after being robbed by four gun-wielding men and had all their work equipment and cellphones stolen.
While noting that none were physically harmed, Sanef is deeply troubled that such traumatic experiences leave long-lasting emotional scars.
ENCA has also condemned the attack on their journalists. “As eNCA we’re appalled by this brazen act of criminality that was committed against two of our team members,” John Bailey, eNCA managing editor said.

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) is launching the fourth round of its Media Relief Fund – started to assist journalists who have lost their jobs and/or their income as a direct result of the Covid-19 national disaster declared in March 2020.
Journalists who previously benefitted from the fund but whose’ circumstances have not changed or have since worsened can also apply and will be eligible in this latest round.
Affected journalists are encouraged to submit their applications with all relevant and supporting documentation from today to be considered by the fund.
Working in conjunction with the Social Justice Initiative (SJI), we wish to report that in our first and 2nd rounds; we received 700 applications and approved 249 journalists for payments.
