hello. thank you for joining me this saturday. i m fredricka whitfield. we begin with the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi recovering in a hospital after a violent attack at the couple s san francisco home early friday morning. a spokesman for the speaker says 82-year-old paul pelosi underwent successful surgery for a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hand. police say a man broke into his home just after 2:00 a.m. friday and attacked him with a hammer. sources say paul pelosi was able to call 911 at the start of the attack and officers responded quickly, taking the suspect into custody. cnn s josh campbell has the details from san francisco. reporter: 82-year-old paul pelosi the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi undergoing surgery after being eviolently attacked with a hammer say the the pelosi s san francisco home. speaker pelosi was in washington at the time. special call, medic, location reporter: police found paul pelosi fending off
those attacks in kyiv. friday, explosions in kyiv and elsewhere this morning two days after putin s bridge to crimea was damaged. reporter: yeah, certainly was a rude awakening for us here in kyiv early in the morning. a little past 8 when the first explosion happened. i ll get out of your way so you can see what s going on here, rescue recovery crews have been working this whole time. right now they re taking away some of the cars that were absolutely mangled by the explosion. we believe the impact crater is where those people are standing around there. you can see that water coming out as well. seems as though the water lines underneath were damaged, the explosions were that strong. there s also one person at least was killed here. we have seen the recovery crews remove at least one body from the scene as we ve been working here throughout the entire morning. in total, the authorities have said that at least five people have been killed, but of course, christine, as you c
dozens more are hurt. today, putin is boasting about these attacks and vowing there will be more. he says the attacks are retaliation for the weekend attack on a key bridge that links annexed crimea to russia. ukraine s president zelenskyy meanwhile says putin s latest assault shows a world he is a terrorist. cnn nick paton walsh is in onei targeted overnight. nick, what are you seeing there? reporter: what we saw here was a sign that while russia boasts about the precision firepower, it s hard to discern what the target was and clear it hasn t really hit it. across ukraine, we ve seen startling brutality, frankly. this is not the first time that russia has it seems targeted or killed civilians since the start of this war, but we haven t seen a level of violence unleashed across pretty much all of ukraine s major population centers like we ve seen today for a number of months, possibly since the start of the war. kyiv fundamentally gained the blunt brunt of this. carnage, m
