HAMPTON The Lane Memorial Library and Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire will host an online event “Rock Rest: A Place in Maine for Black Vacationers with Sankofa scholar Nur Shoop and guest commentator Bob Sheppard on Wednesday, April 21.
The virtual program will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will be presented via the Zoom app available on most computers and handheld devices. No registration is required. This event is free and open to all.
“Rock Rest” was established in Kittery Point, Maine, after World War II when more leisure time and travel became available for many people. Every summer tourist season, from the mid-1940s until the early 1970s, the modest private home of Clayton and Hazel Sinclair became a comforting retreat on the coast of Maine for middle-class African Americans who learned about this place where they would be welcomed.
