Lessons for Negotiations in Venezuela: A Roadmap

Lessons for Negotiations in Venezuela: A Roadmap Moises Rendon & Claudia Fernandez May 25, 2021 Venezuela is facing a national crisis like no other. Millions have left the country, fleeing the authoritarian regime of Nicolás Maduro. Millions more are starving and sick, ravaged by deadly surges of Covid-19. One of the few remaining options to bring democracy to the country is through negotiations, but what goes into a successful negotiation? Who needs to be represented in the talks? Who needs to be in the room? Who needs to be at the table to ensure that real and lasting change can be brought to combat an increasingly autocratic state, increasing political censorship, and a pandemic?

Venezuela: Money scam by opposition leaders unveiled by Maduro s Government — MercoPress

“We could vaccinate 5 million Venezuelans with that money that is being stolen,” Rodríguez said. Venezuela’s National Assembly Speaker, Jorge Rodríguez – recognized by Nicolás Maduro’s Government – Tuesday denounced opposition leaders were behind a scam plan to “steal” more than 53 million dollars of Venezuela s money frozen in the United States. ”We are going to show an event that occurred yesterday (Monday), a double scam, a double robbery, with a meeting that took place yesterday with some former deputies, [who are] members of a terrorist group called Voluntad Popular,“ said Rodríguez, of the ruling Chavist party. Rodríguez said Marco Aurelio Quiñones, Sergio Vergara, Franco Casella, Winston Flores, Adriana Pichardo and Freddy Superlano participated in this meeting.

Watch List 2021

Introduction Few of us will look back fondly at 2020. Indeed, in Afghanistan, despite peace talks, in Yemen, the Sahel and Somalia, violence and human suffering continued apace. The latter part of the year saw wars reignite in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Central African Republic. A new conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region grinds on, this one especially troubling due not only to its human toll but the risk of spillover.

Venezuela: What Lies Ahead after Election Clinches Maduro s Clean Sweep

What’s new? After years of political turmoil, elections for Venezuela’s National Assembly ended in a predictable victory for President Nicolás Maduro. Mainstream opposition parties boycotted the poll and, alongside the U.S. and Latin American and European countries, accuse the government of rigging the elections. Why does it matter? Elimination of the opposition majority in parliament will greatly complicate efforts to resolve the standoff with the government. The boycott split the opposition, and dwindling support for its leader Juan Guaidó raises questions about who might face the government in future negotiations. What should be done? The opposition should affirm that it backs a negotiated settlement, disavowing the government’s violent overthrow. To usher in talks, Maduro should release political prisoners and rein in the secret police, while the incoming U.S. administration should reconsider sanctions that cause humanitarian harm and seek multilateral solutions t
