scrapped for the time being. is that because we thought it was a good idea? absolutely not. as a father, the most important thing to me is the safety of my children i have to believe a world where there s a version of instagram designed for tweens, no ads, age appropriate content and a parent can choose to let their child use it and control things like who they follow and who they message is better than the alternative. let s talk about the kids for a second according to your own research, as i understand it, roughly a third of teenage girls who said when they felt bad about their bodies, instagram made them feel worse. how do we fix that so i don t believe that s exactly what the research said, but i do want to be clear if anybody leaves using instagram feeling worse about themselves, that s an important issue we need to take seriously and need to figure out how to address we have a number of ideas in the world of negative social comparison last week we announced we were working
a full court press today to defend instagram after the wall street journal reported that internal facebook documents showed the company was aware of the harmful effects on girls and their well-being but facebook said the journal s repo reporting, quote, simply is not accurate but facebook s team is working to better the app for young users. if anyone leaves feeling badly about themselves, that s something we need to address last week we announced we were working on nudges, the idea that if you re going very deep in one topic, you might try another topic. and another project that we call take a break the idea you could put your instagram on pause for a period of time if you re in a moment of vulnerability. joining us now is nbc news senior reporter brandi drojny.
parents are suffering through how do we help our children get through just day-to-day existence without having mental health crisis. and he s over there fueling the fire in that arena. and to me it s criminal. so, when instagram says, and we should say that facebook bought instagram nine years ago or so. says that it s looking for new ways now to discourage users from focusing on their physical appearance. how much credence do you give that claim that they re looking into ways to stop that? you know, it seems to me if you look at the report, they talk about doing these nudges and that they re trying to figure out a way to manage this algorithm that they ve created. i did a ted talk and talked about this manage algorithm. they ve lost control of it. and so when they re doing these nudges to get people and kids into other areas, what you re telling me is that we should now turn around and trust where they re nudging these children to go when in fact they don t
so we ll be keeping an eye on this. back to you. air canada will mandate covid vaccination for all its employees starting october 30. workers who refuse to get their shot risk termination or being put on unpaid leave. delta air lines though taking a different approach here. it will charge unvaccinated employees an extra $200 a month for their health care plan stopping short of a mandate but hoping this nudges everyone to get the vaccine. here is their ceo. every company has to make its own decision for its culture, its people, what works. delta is one of the heist vaccination rates of any company i m aware. already using voluntary measures. and i think these added voluntary steps short of mandating a vaccine will get us as close to 100% as we can. delta is also requiring weekly covid tests and masks for unvaccinated employees and limiting the number of sick days
can t mandate it, so how do you increase the incentives? they haven t worked. how would you nudge people to get the vaccine? i think it s very useful to think back of our experience in dealing with smoking and see what happened. so if you go back to the 1960s, when it first became clear that smoking led to lung cancer and other kinds of cancer, we started with information campaigns, nudges. we added warning labels. gradually we started adding other incentives like taxing the cigarettes and making it difficult to smoke. you weren t allowed to smoke in your office or at a restaurant or in an airplane. i think we re seeing the same thing with vaccines. so lots of places are starting to announce mandates, but they re not quite mandates. instead they re saying if you
