Photo: Supplied by Netflix I Am Girls follows special crimes investigator Jodie Snyman (Erica Wessels) and police officer Ntombizonke Bapai (Hlubi Mboya) as they form an unlikely bond and race against the clock to stop a notorious child trafficking ring in South Africa.  Directed by Donovan Marsh ( Hunter, Killer), the thriller is set against the dying days of apartheid, and involved in the trafficking operation are, among other influential figures, powerful South African politicians. ( Speaking to Channel24, Donovan, who is no stranger to tackling the seedy underbelly of the South African criminal world in his work, says: I ll be totally honest with you. The first time I encountered the project, there was already a kind of outline and a script. And I initially felt like the subject matter was too dark.

Human trafficking is, by nature, a hidden scourge. Accounts of the degree of its prevalence are alarmingly varied and public perception of it even more so.
