Every other year Willie would be live, onstage with his prediction shortly after sunrise with hundreds watching. Not possible with COVID-19 this year. The town’s annual winter festival was cancelled given public health restrictions against people gathering.
Willie would whisper words into the ear of the Mayor of the Land of Marmot, Jackson, who would translate from his native tongue, groundhogs. According to custom, if Willie doesn’t see his shadow, spring’s coming early. If he does, there’ll be six more weeks of winter (at least).
But Willie’s furry face didn’t appear in the video either.

This year, Wiarton Willie’s annual prediction event was pre-recorded and released to media outlets shortly before the traditional 8:07 a.m. prediction time Tuesday. It was a retrospective of predictions past, with old footage of past mayors and Willies and of the festival’s origins.
Well, it’s that time of year again, Groundhog Day (although it has felt that way for most of 2020…) And Canada’s beloved groundhogs have predicted an early spring for 2021.
As the story goes, if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2, you’ll want to keep warm indoors as that means six more weeks of cold winter weather. No shadow? that means we’re in for warmer weather very soon.
Both Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam and Ontario’s Wiarton Willie failed to see their shadows this morning, signifying that an early spring is in the forecast for 2021.
Though this year, their annual predictions were delivered online due to COVID-19.
