Berikut penuturan Al Hallaj tentang makrifatnya Iblis itu: Ketika diperintahkan sujud kepada Adam, Iblis menjawab perintah itu di hadapan Yang Haq: Apakah kemuliaan sujud sudah terangkat dari ruang batin kesadaran diriku untuk selain-Mu, sehingga saya harus bersujud pada Adam? Mengapa Engkau memerintahkanku, padahal Engkau pun telah melarangku (sejak zaman azali).”
