Ikaika, Leilehua and Alena were found extremely malnourished on different islands in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. They were released on Kuaihelani, or Midway Atoll, in March.
The initial system gave subsistence fishers those with a Native Hawaiian Subsistence Practices Fishing Permit the ability to sell up to $15,000 worth of fish caught in the area to recoup fuel, food, bait and other costs of that fishing trip.
Officials from the University of Iowa’s Museum of Natural History are trying to raise $1 million to pay for the restoration of an exhibit in the Hall of Birds after over 100 years of operation. The Laysan Island Cyclorama exhibit needs a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system and professional conservators to restore the mural.
