Letter writers encourage people to vote for someone other than former School Board member Christie New Craig for state Senate, remember the late Robert “Bob” W. Hunter, and oppose development near the Great Dismal Swamp.
A group of seven residents known as the Rural Chesapeake Preservation Committee are pursuing the ballot referendum to ask voters whether the City Council should make environmental and rural land preservation a priority in southern Chesapeake.
The City Council approved the rezoning Tuesday after hearing from more than a dozen speakers who expressed a mixed bag of concerns and support for the project.
Once rezoned, uses for the land could include research and development facilities, e-commerce and distribution centers, environmentally appropriate manufacturing, medical campuses, corporate headquarters and higher learning centers.
