Restricted Fire Zone continues for region

5 July 2021 Staff Despite some precipitation, extreme forest fire hazard conditions continue to grip the western half of the northwest region including Kenora, Red Lake, Dryden, Fort Frances and Sioux Lookout districts. A Restricted Fire Zone continues to be in effect for these regions. The municipalities of Fort Frances, Emo, Chapple, LaVallee and Devlin have also imposed Total Fire Bans until further notice. “Due to the high to extreme forest fire hazard, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has implemented a Restricted Fire Zone in the Kenora, Fort Frances and Dryden Districts, and southern portions of Sioux Lookout and Red Lake Districts. The Restricted Fire Zone will be in effect until further notice, stated a release from MNRF. “Outdoor fires are banned. Portable gas stoves may still be used BUT must be handled with extreme care.”

Five new forest fires discovered in Northwest

THUNDER BAY An extreme fire hazard continues in parts of Northwestern Ontario. Kenora, Red Lake, Dryden, Fort Frances and Sioux Lookout districts have earned the designation, while Thunder Bay and Nipigon are under a high to extreme hazard status. Five new fifes were discovered by late Saturday afternoon, four of which are not under control (Nipigon 15, Fort Frances 54, Red Lake 56 and Nipigon 14. Sioux Lookout fire, located near Williams Lake northwest of Pickle Lake, has grown to 10 hectares and is being observed. A 469-hectare fire, Sioux Lookout 39, located northwest of Pickle Lake, was discovered late on Friday and is also being observed. Red Lake 44, near Wagner Bay on Birch Lake, received aerial suppression, while Sioux Lookout 40, burning south of Birch Lake, is being monitored.
