We continue our celebration of black History Month with a look at the Schomburg Center for research in black culture where historical artifacts have chronicled the black experience for nearly a century. The latest exhibit, digging up the past a history of the Schomburg Center, marks its 90th anniversary. And joining us today is dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the director of the schomburg. So every now and then we have founder Arturo Alfonso schomburg, an afropuerto rican, arrives in new york in 1891. This year happened to be extra special because it is our 90th anniversary. Police and the fbi have secured the area, but earlier this evening it was the scene of a bloody mass shooting centered around the excel industries plant. We just took off running and everybody was coming outside and as soon as we got outside there was gunshots. People were screaming. People were crying. We just didnt know what to do. They started off saying fire and then we heard the gunshots and it wasnt a fire. More people running and all of a sudden pow, pow, pow and im going i started running too. Police say multiple employees were shot at excel, a lawn care company. The gunman was also an employee there. But he started his deadly rampage in other areas in other counties.
