Volunteers are needed to help with police and fire dog welfare checks DOG loving volunteers are needed to help ensure police and fire service pooches are being treated correctly. Volunteers will make unannounced visits to kennels to observe, comment and report on the conditions that Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service dogs are housed. They will also view outdoor dog training sessions and accompany dog handlers and their canine companions. The volunteers are part of a dog welfare scheme by Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness which will check the welfare of dogs in both services.
