obviously might be the key in trying to calm this man down. they also have aerial support in the area to see if the man tries to leave some of these buildings. very active scene in the middle of this building, obviously in the middle of the afternoon. people desperately calling 911 because when the shots started firing people started running and the all call came out as an active shooter. all right, ryan, if you can stand by for us, ryan young is there for us in midtown atlanta as all of this is developing. and i want to bring in our josh campbell as we are talking about what is really a developing story there in atlanta. josh, we ve just been monitoring these pictures coming in to us from the scene. you heard ryan s report there. we actually saw some atlanta police, some marshals, some troopers who appeared to be staging. and then here just about a couple minutes ago they sort of proceeded forward toward it appears this building that you hear ryan describing authorities are going to
force. it is a police force responding to a shooting and we ll bring you updates as to why those officers were in motion. and there were people moving around in the background. it did not appear anyone was in imminent danger. the movement of those vehicles did not appear to be urgent. you see folks walking you the street. perhaps there is optimism in neutralizing the shooter. the staging is a safe area to be walking by. this is midtown, atlanta. this is a very busy area. boris, you re familiar with it having recently anchored a show based not far from there. this is a place where people are going about their day, where they are working and so you can see some of them have been sheltering in place. obviously that s been a huge disruption to the day. again at this point we did just see those bearcat vehicles move, the armored vehicles that the
any message to the public and she said she s asking for people to shelter in place and avoid the area. they basically squared off an area in midtown, closed it off to the public. we re also getting alerts from the atlanta public school who are sending out alerts to have people lock down as well. so students are on lockdown in and around the area as are, as we ve been reporting, several businesses in lockdown as well. still very much so an active situation that is deadly. at least one person killed, four people shot altogether in this incident so far. and that s the update that we can report as a result of this preliminary investigation, details they just put out, jim. so at this point three at the hospital, a fourth as you mentioned there, jim, as we just learned from the atlanta police department, deceased at the scene. officers are not only looking for the suspect, also according to what they re posting on social media looking for any other victims. right? because this is a large b
focus is on finding the shooter and containing the situation. and absolutely, it appears as though they very quickly secured a perimeter around those buildings and that s something that i wanted to step back and focus on with ryan because obviously this north side hospital medical midtown is located in a very busy area in atlanta, and i m wondering, ryan, if you can paint a picture for us of what that looks like on a standard wednesday afternoon. a lot of folks in that area, as you noted, a lot of people going to medical appointments, not an area where you would anticipate any kind of violence or the potential for a shooting. boy, that s a great point. i ve been to this medical center before. this is one of those medical centers that s popped up in the last few years here in the bustling midtown area during the pandemic. atlanta saw an unbelievable growth of people. you have a parking garage that s stacked to the side and then you
ryan, we are looking at a picture there of midtown atlanta. we are seeing law enforcement as they are staging. we are seeing a number of fire department vehicles, ambulances ready for whatever this may bring. what are you learning there on the ground? reporter: i think josh had a good point there. what i ve learned from sources i have here in the atlanta police department, because the officers are they were able to set up a perimeter with their officers pretty soon after the shooting happened and then bring the s.w.a.t. team in. but at the same time what they wanted to do was make sure no one could get outside the containment. once they set that containment up, they were able to bring in their s.w.a.t. team and additional resources. i m being told right now that four patients have been involved. three patients have been transported. so we re not sure if the the
