Idaho Falls city council approves Northgate Mile plan
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - People and businesses in the Northgate Mile -1st Street area of Idaho Falls could see some changes in the near future after the city council approved the findings of the area-wide planning study Thursday evening.
Kerry Beutler, the assistant planning director for the city of Idaho Falls, said the study involved getting feedback from residents and business owners in the area. Traffic circulation, also just amenities and improvement to the areas both in code enforcement and looking at blighted areas, Beutler said. But also just additional amenities like improved streetscapes, lighting, those types of things.

IDAHO FALLS Interstate 15 is back open and electricity is being restored following multiple downed power lines and outages Monday night.
The city of Idaho Falls received the first report of a problem around 11:10 p.m. on the 1400 block of Lindsay Boulevard. A driver reported that a power pole was on fire and a power line across I-15 had the potential of falling. The Idaho Falls Fire Department and Idaho State Police responded to the area. The power line came down across the interstate, near Teton Stage Lines, and ISP shut down I-15.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE: Idaho Falls Power reports repairs were being completed at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and power was expected to be fully restored soon.
The exact cause of the outages are under investigation, but a combination of environmental factors are suspected.
ORIGINAL STORY: Southbound I-15 between Roberts and Idaho Falls is back open Tuesday morning. Idaho State Police closed the stretch of road down to milepost 119 for a downed powerline.
The Idaho Falls Fire Department responded to multiple power-related calls overnight.
Another report stated the U-haul location on Northgate Mile had two power poles on fire. The witness stated that there were a lot of flames and that the wind was causing the fire to spread. The power pole was actively sparking. A nearby Mexican restaurant and gas station were evacuated as a safety precaution.

The city is financing the project with $30 million worth of certificates of participation, or tax-exempt bonds government entities can take out to pay for a project. They donât require a public vote, unlike a traditional bond for a construction project which needs two-thirds voter approval in Idaho. Idaho Falls will repay them over 22 years and had expected to spend $12.4 million on interest at an anticipated 3.25% rate. However, the city sold the certificates quickly and got an interest rate of 1.89% locked in for the life of the certificates, which will bring the amount spent on interest to less than half that, said city spokesman Bud Cranor.
