Tiger shark reported off popular North Coast beach

The Dorsal app reported a sighting of what s believed to be a tiger shark off Byron Bay s Main Beach shortly after 10am. A member of the public has since reported having seen a shark while driving across Missingham Bridge in Ballina about 7.30am.   Original story: There have been reports of a possible tiger shark off the coast of Byron Bay. Shark surveillance app Dorsal has indicated a 3m shark was seen off Main Beach shortly after 10am. The report first says the shark is of an unidentified species , but later on the entry indicates Surf Life Saving NSW have reported this is a tiger shark.

One of the outcomes of the dredging works at Shaws Bay was the creation of a new sandy beach in Pop Denison Reserve. While staff at Ballina Shire Council call it East Beach, it doesn t have an official name, and may never get one. But because everyone loves a good nickname, we decided to ask locals what it should be called. Of course, the jokers came out in full force on our Facebook page and suggested names such as Shark Beach, Sea Lice Cove, Midgies Bite Beach, Stingray Beach, Kevin, South Byron Bay, Balna Beach (after the popular Instagram page), Dredgebay Beach and Shore Bay.

Premium Content Subscriber only Beach hoons are on notice to behave or the entire stretch of beach between Evans Head and Ballina could be closed to four-wheel drives. In what has been described as a compromise that will put the fate of the beach in the community s hands, Richmond Valley Council has voted to close only one of its access points at this stage. Ballina Shire Council closed the Patchs Beach access at South Ballina last year. It s understood work is continuing to close other access points which are managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service and Crown Lands. In the meantime, Richmond Valley Council will close Boundary Creek.
