NI minister asks Govt to prevent cross-border travel

The Northern Ireland Health Minister has written to the Irish Government asking it to do all it can to prevent non-essential cross-border travel, as restrictions on inter-county travel here are lifted on Monday. Robin Swann said he s concerned that cross border interactions, for things like shopping and socialising, could fuel a fresh increase in community transmission of Covid-19 in the Republic and the North. In a letter to Stephen Donnelly seen by RTÉ News, Minister Swann said while he looks forward to a time when cross border activities can resume, we are not there yet . He said clear messaging would be needed on the issue, backed up by enforcement if required .

People arriving into Northern Ireland required to sign passenger locator forms if travelling across the border

It is an offence to provide incorrect information on a passenger locator form and can be punished by a fine of up to €2,500 or six months in prison. The has been on going tensions between the Government and the Northern Assembly over the sharing of passenger information. GDPR issues were cited as an issue by the Government but the problem has since been overcome and the information will now be shared. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney held a meeting last night with Northern Ireland leaders Arlene Foster and Michelle O’Neill. Northern Ireland Health Minister also attended the video conference call.
